Charlie Musselwhite
Charlie Musselwhite’s journey through the blues was from his birth in Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago and California. Arriving in Chicago in the early sixties, he was just in time for the epochal blues revival. In 1966 at the age of 22 he recorded the landmark Stand Back! to rave reviews. A precipitous relocation to San Francisco in 1967, where his album was being played on underground radio, found him welcomed into the counterculture scene around the Fillmore West as an authentic purveyor of the real deal blues.
Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. This man cut his musical teeth alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and everyone on the South side of Chicago in the early 1960’s. Thank your lucky stars that he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other.
Musselwhite, more than any other harmonica player of his generation, can rightfully lay claim to inheriting the mantle of many of the great harp players that came before him with music as dark as Mississippi mud and as uplifting as the blue skies of California. He is a 13 time Grammy nominee winning in 2014 for his collaboration with Ben Harper and has won 33 Blues Music Awards.

Tommy Castro & The Painkillers
Tommy Castro is a three time winner of the prestigious Blues Music Award for Entertainer of the Year, most recently in 2022 when he also won for Album of the Year and with his bandmates for Band of the Year. He is as good a live act as you can find in the blues world and in any other world for that matter. His seventeen albums cover a full range of his influences from John Lee Hooker and Taj Mahal to rock and roll and horn fueled soul – never covering the same ground twice.
Living Blues magazine describes his playing as “Sizzling, slow burning, gritty blues rock… shimmering, swampy, downright funky vibes drenched with Castros stinging, pure and crisp lead runs and fluid, jet-fueled solos.” Sounds about right. Don’t miss him.

Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds
For nearly a decade, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds have been
hailed for their explosive brand of modern soul, equally celebrated for their three studio albums and electrifying live performances. Kincheloe grew up amongst an intensely musical family in upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains, co-founding Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds with her brother Jackson at just 18. The band based itself in Brooklyn and soon earned a rep as one of the hardest working outfits anywhere in the world, playing upwards of 150 shows each year including headline dates, sold out residencies, and top festivals. “Sister Sparrow, Arleigh Kincheloe’s nom de disque, is a soul queen,” raved The Washington Post, while NPR simply noted, “one of the biggest voices in rock music.”

Melody Angel
Melody Angel is an artist gaining some much deserved recognition. The Chicago Reader called her “The Future of the Blues” and the Southside Chicago native is indeed navigating a forward looking musical path while integrating the legacy of classic blues. Her mother was a cousin of Otis Rush and she grew up surrounded by a musical family who loved soul and gospel in addition to the blues and this was a major influence in her vocal style. These old roots are grafted onto her other musical mentors, most notably Prince and Jimi Hendrix. Blues is an ever evolving medium and Melody is helping lead it forward.

Honey Island Swamp Band
What better way to close down our 30th Annual Chenango Blues Fest than by presenting one of our, and all of our fans, favorite bands. New Orleans natives thrown together in San Francisco by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Honey Island Swamp Band brings together the diverse talents of its members to encompass a laundry list of influences. The New Orleans Time Picayune says “blues, Southern rock boogie, Appalachin music and New Orleans swamp funk all factor into their sound, but its decidedly their own. We wanted to end our anniversary event with a party, and we couldn’t think of a better way to do it. Stick around and celebrate with us as we end the day in style.
